The city needs a separate pest control authority
Due to the weather, climate and geographical location of Bangladesh, the number of pests and insects is high here. More than five hundred such small insects and animals live in Dhaka city alone. But not all of them are harmful for us. We see some beneficial insects and animals roaming in and around our house. After mosquitoes, the city dwellers are more worried about cockroaches, termites, and cockroaches that come into the house. Because, apart from irony, they create various diseases and health risks.
Big cities, including our two city corporations of Dhaka, only do the work of killing mosquitoes. There is a reason for this. In recent times, mosquitoes act as vectors for the spread of various diseases including dengue and chikungunya. They have no activity in controlling and suppressing other harmful pests.
Therefore, the city dwellers do the work of suppressing these pests on their own responsibility and through private institutions. We have recently seen the death of two children in Bashundhara residential area. I hope after this incident, we will come to our senses.
Many countries around the world have a statutory list of pesticides used in household pest control. No pesticide can be used everywhere at will. There are policies and laws on the use of pesticides. The World Health Organization has approved a list of pesticides that can be used for public purposes. Presumably, the pest control service company must have applied pesticides without following the guidelines of the World Health Organization.
According to the police, a toxic chemical called aluminum phosphide was used in that house in Bashundhara residential area.
Aluminum phosphide is the generic name of an insecticide. It is a highly toxic pesticide, which is readily available in tablet form in our country. This tablet is being used randomly to control scabies. It is known by different names in the market of Bangladesh.
